Day trips and half-day trips can be arranged at any time of the year. Please contact us for more information and bookings. Our prices for guidings in our local area start at 60 € for half a day and 120 € for a whole day of birdwatching. The price per person decreases as more people join the trip, and at four or more participants the price is only 40 € per person for a full day of birdwatching. When booking, please specify whether you would like to share costs and guide with others or not. Lunches, long-distance pick-ups and other services are not included but can be arranged on request.

Montsià seen from the Ebro Delta

Montsià is a small mountain chain situated between the Ebro Delta and the nature park of Els Ports. The mountains reach heights up to 900m and hold a wide variety of habitats and wildlife. Large areas are used for plantations of olives, almonds, oranges, and other fruit trees, whereas other areas are left in a wild state. The flora in these areas is dominated by aromatic herbs, low scrubs and evergreen oaks, yet the dry vegetation is in more shady areas replaced by larger trees and bushes. Several streams run down the mountains, but there are no major rivers. There are many spectacular, well-marked hiking paths through the mountains, and smaller roads allow you to visit Montsià by car or bicycle.

Montsià is home to several species of mammals, the largest being the Wild Boar. Fox, Badger, House Marten, Civet, Hare, Rabbit, Hedgehog, and Squirrel also inhabit the area, and a trip to Montsià usually include encounters with at least one of these species. The rock faces are superb for raptors and owls, and the steep areas are inhabited by Bonelli's Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, and Eagle Owl. Many smaller bird species are breeding around the fruit plantations during the summer, and in winter the same plantations are visited by thousands of Chaffinches and Blackcaps searching for food. The olive plantations are frequently visited by gulls in the winter, as the olives provide these birds with valuable calories.

Golden Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Kestrel, Red-legged Partridge, Collared Dove, Eagle Owl, Long-eared Owl, Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Hoopoe, Woodlark, Mistle Thrush, Blue Rock Thrush, Sardinian Warbler, Great Tit, Firecrest, Serin, Goldfinch, and Cirl Bunting.

SUMMER VISITORS:

Short-toed Eagle, Turtle Dove, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Common Nightjar, Red-necked Nightjar, Alpine Swift, Pallid Swift, Bee-eater, Red-rumped Swallow, Black-eared Wheatear, Nightingale, Subalpine Warbler, Orphean Warbler, Melodious Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, Woodchat Shrike, and Golden Oriole.

WINTERING SPECIES:

Common Buzzard, Song Thrush, Zitting Cisticola, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Alpine Accentor, and Chaffinch.

SPECIES SEEN ON MIGRATION:

White Stork, Booted Eagle, Black Kite, Honey Buzzard, Hobby, Wryneck,  and Willow Warbler, Pied Flycatcher.

Montsià is easily reached from the towns of Sant Carles de la Ràpita and Amposta, but there are currently no hotels situated in the mountain chain itself. Both towns have a wide selection of restaurants; here is a list of the ones we recommend.

Parador de Tortosa - four star hotel in the city of Tortosa. The parador is a castle from the 10th century

Llansola - excellent local food in atmospheric restaurant
