Birding trip report - May 10th 2007

We started at 8:30 a.m. from the harbour in Barcelona, where Ann and Erik had just landed with their cruise. We decided to head to Garraf mountains Nature Park as soon as possible in order to avoid the high temperatures of the midday. Traffic was a little annoying but we were in the right place around 9 o'clock. It was a clear day without clouds and soon the sky was full of swifts. We managed to spot all the 3 possible species; Alpine, Pallid, and Common.

The day was quite quiet as we walked through a scrubland. From the bushes, many Sardinian Warblers were calling all the time, and among them were Dartford Warblers and Stonechats on top of the bushes. After a short walk we started to find some migrants moving around: Woodchat Shrike, Black-eared and Northern Wheatears, Whinchat, Redstart, Willow Warbler and Pied Flycatcher.

After some interesting birds, we decided to move to the wetlands of the Llobregat Delta Nature Reserves. A short drive took us to the Remolar lagoon and we easily started to add more species to the day list. One remarkable species was a flock of Audouin’s Gulls (the logo of Audouin Birding Tours) that were roosting in the lagoon; other interesting birds were an Eurasian Spoonbill that showed briefly before landing and a Flamingo eating in front of the wooden view point. Several wader species were on the mudflats and after some time and having enjoyed good views of many species we headed to our last place.

Another short drive took us close to the Cal Tet lagoon. From the parking place we started walking through a reed bed until we reached a view point. On the way we managed to scope Zitting Cisticola after following some fast moving birds. The lagoon in front of us allowed excellent views of Whiskered, Black and the scarce White-winged Black Terns. Also from this point we were able to see Purple and Squacco Herons and Purple Swamphen. On our way back, we found some Bee-eaters that added some colour and a good end to the hours birding close to Barcelona city. At 3 p.m. and after some traffic jam getting into Barcelona, our trip ended in las Ramblas with some time to learn about the city before departing again with cruise.

Comments from Ann and Erik

We couldn't have been happier with Oriol. We saw about 60+ different species of birds. He is very knowledgeable and personable. I think the flamingo, spoonbill and beeater were the highlights of the day.  We will recommend you to any of our friends who may be birding in Spain.
